Ireland to face West Indies this summer

Cricket Ireland have announced that West Indies A have replaced New Zealand A as Ireland’s opponents for two 50-over matches to be played on June 23 and 25 at Stormont.
New Zealand Cricket announced that they had withdrawn from their proposed summer tour, and agreement was reached with West Indies Cricket Board that West Indies A would take their place.
Phil Simmons, the Ireland coach, said: “While it’s disappointing that New Zealand are unable to travel, it’s fortunate that the ECB have managed to secure quality opposition in the form of West Indies.
“They will provide a stern challenge for us, but in our conditions we should do well against them. I’m sure the attractive brand of cricket that they play will prove pleasing to the Irish public.”

Eoin Morgan bought up in IPL auction

Dublin cricketer Eoin Morgan was snapped up for $220,000 by the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the player auction for the Indian Premier League Twenty20 cricket competition.

He will join up with England star Kevin Pietersen at the Bangalore club for the tournament that begins in March and runs to April 25 at venues across the sub-continent.

Morgan was a prime target for a number of sides, with Challengers securing his services for the tournament when they beat an initial offer of $200,000 from Chennai Super Kings.

England’s Graeme Swann, Tim Bresnan, Rob Key, Monty Panesar, Jonathan Trott, Mark Ramprakash and Anthony McGrath went unsold, as did Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi and Australia’s Brad Haddin.

Ireland discover draw for Cricket World Cup

Ireland’s cricketers have been drawn alongside the likes of England, India, South Africa and the West Indies in their Group B pool announced this week for the 2011 World Cup event being held in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

The round-robin nature of the event evolved after criticism of the last group-based set-up at the previous international competition.

The top four sides in each group after the six initial matches will progress to a Super Eights stage. Each side in the tournament will play at least six matches.

Locals included in Ireland squad to face Yorkshire

Ireland have named a squad of 12 for their fixture with a Yorkshire XI in Leeds next week.

The side features locals Andrew Balbirnie (Pembroke), Shane Getkate and Fintan McAllister (both Malahide), and is captained by Nigel Jones from Civil Service North.

There is a strong emphasis on youth in the squad, a fact acknowledged by Ireland ‘A’ coach Adrian Birrell: “I’m delighted with the composition of the twelve. The selectors see these players as the future of Irish cricket, and this fixture is a great way of getting them experience of multi-day cricket.”
