IRELAND’S fastest road-race cyclists are gearing up for the ever-popular Stephen Roche Grand Prix which hits the streets of Meadowmount, Ballinteer, next Wednesday, June 24.

The event is once again part of the Dundrum Summer Festival and the accessibility for race fans, along with the summer evening date, ensures a carnival atmosphere for what is one of the highlights of the Dublin cycling calendar.
As well as the senior race, the stars of tomorrow will be in action with races scheduled for Under-12, Under-14 and Under-16 ahead of the main event. The Irish National Criterium Championship race gets under way at 7.15pm on Wednesday, June 24.

Ballinteer CS host Leinster handball finals

bcshandballThe Leinster schools’ Olympic Handball finals were held last week in Ballinteer Community School.

The Under-17 final between Ballinteer Community School and Drimnagh Castle was “a game of heart and soul, passion and will to win”, according to BCS coach, Lorraine Gallagher. It was a very close contest, which went to extra time and penalties. Drimnagh Castle beat BCS 3-1 on penalties.

After a cautious start in the Under-15 final, with defenders on both sides working hard, BCS eventually beat Drimnagh Castle 26-20.

Olympic handball is relatively new to BCS. According to Lorraine Gallagher, “Handball brings out the best in players and spectators. It demands a high level of sportsmanship and fair play.”
