Swords 1 Back to Top of Division 5

Swords 1sts 1-0 Corinthians Swords Hockey Club went back to the top of the league table on Saturday with a hard-fought 1-0 win away to Corinthians.

Swords made things hard for themselves in the first half and never really got a hold of the game, letting Corinthians have a lot of the possession. Stephanie Jones in the Swords goal pulled off a superb save before half time to keep the teams level.

Swords knew they had to turn things around in the second half and began well, attacking the Corinthians defence and creating a goal chance straight from the tip-off.

The improved performance was seen throughout the team and some good attacking play put the Corinthians defence under pressure again and again. The goal finally came midway through the half when Lee-Ann Wood attacked down the right and sent her cross into Aisling Corby in the Corinthians circle. Corby controlled the ball and passed to the onrushing Siobhan McKittrick who made no mistake in burying the ball past the `keeper.

Swords pressed for another goal, and came close through a short corner, but the score-line stayed at 1-0 and swords were relieved to come away with another valuable 3 points.

Ireland ladies look to secure top-tier status

Loreto’s Nikki Symmonds and Pegasus’ Alex Speers were the scorers as Ireland’s ladies hockey team moved themselves to within one point of retaining their top-tier status in Europe for next season with a tense 2-1 victory over Azerbaijan.

With the tie tied at 1-1 with 20 minutes to go, both sides sought the winner, and Azerbaijan looked like they were about to cause a major upset when Marina Aliyeva pounced on a loose ball, scooping it onto her reverse towards the goal, but Symmons was on hand to save it off the line.

Ireland then made the play of the game with a great four-on-two attack; displaying great skill as Emma Smyth fed the ball in to Speers, who laid off for Megan Frazer’s strike which Speers slid in to deflect over the keeper’s head for the winning goal.

The result puts the ladies top of Pool C, ahead of Scotland, Russia and Azerbaijan, and play in their final pool game against Russia this Saturday, where a draw will be enough to ensure they remain in the A division of European Hockey.

Five locals in U-16 hockey squad to face England

Martha Hume Barber and Aisling Naughton (Corinthian), Juliette King Hall (Hermes), Lisa McCarthy (Railway) and Emily Beatty (Alexandra College) have been selected in a 21-player Under-16 squad to face England in a three-match series on June 26 to 28.

Coach Una McCarthy said: “As this is a non-European competition year for the Under-16s and very much about developing players, 21 have been selected with the intention of giving these young players experience of participating in a series of highly competitive matches. Having played Belgium at Easter, the majority of that squad remain, but a number of new younger players have been added in the hope of building on the progress made over those three matches.”

The Under-16s face England on June 26 at 8pm at Pembroke Wanderers, on June 27 at 4pm at UCD and on June 28 at 9,30am also at UCD.
