Fitzwilliam to host Irish Squash Open

The Fitzwilliam Lawn Tennis Club in Ranelagh is hosting the 2010 Cannon Kirk Irish Squash Open this year from August 30.

The event has attracted a world-class field in the women’s and men’s draws.  Organisers are thrilled that the event, which had to be cancelled in April due to the volcanic ash cloud, has attracted a stronger entry than ever before.

A particularly strong women’s draw is headed by Irish number 1 Madeline Perry, who has  just won the Australian Open, and will undoubtedly be ranked in the world top 5 in the next ranking in September. Madeline already has a win over world number 1, Nicol David, (Malaysia) and world number 2, Jenny Duncalf (England). Natalie Grainger of the USA is seeded at 2 in the draw.

The Men’s event sees the return of Mohd Azlan Iskandar who is currently ranked fourteen in the World.  Top seed Iskandar, a finalist in 2008, will hope to go one step further this year.  Hot on his heels is second seed, Australian Stewart Boswell, who is currently ranked eighteen in the World.  With the return from injury of former Irish Open champion, Spain’s Borja Golan, the top seeds are guaranteed a tough passage if they are to reach the final.

Entry to all rounds is free.

Ryan helps Fitzwilliam retain national squash title

Leopardstown legend Derek Ryan proved a vital cog in the Fitzwilliam team that retained their national club squash title at the Belfast Boat Club last week.

His tie with the home club’s Arthur Gaskin proved a key battle, going all the way to a fifth set before the 39-year-old Ryan took the decider 11-8.

Clubmate Rory Byrne followed him on court to beat Neil Martin to clinch the title and a place in September’s European Club Championships in Sweden.
