Sporting continue defence of FAI Ford Cup

Sporting Fingal continue the defence of their FAI Ford Cup by hosting the in-form Limerick on Friday night at Morton Stadium (7.45pm).

Liam Buckley’s sole injury concern is Colin Hawkins, who will undergo a pre-match fitness test to determine if he’s fit to start after six weeks out with broken ribs.

After Monday’s night’s last-gasp defeat to St. Patrick’s Athletic which brought their four match winning streak to an end, Buckley is expecting another difficult challenge for his charges from the First Division side.

“We were in the same position as Limerick last season insofar as they’ll want to belie their tag of underdogs against a top-flight side,” he said.

“From our perspective, the memories our last season’s triumph remain with the players who enjoyed that occasion and I’m certain that they, along with our pre-season recruits, will want to repeat last year’s heroics by marching on towards the final which has the extra caret of being played in the Aviva Stadium.

“Those ambitions can only be maintained with a strong display tonight against a Limerick side very much in the ascendancy.”

Sporting Fingal return to scene of promotion

Liam Buckley brings his Sporting Fingal side back to the scene of their promotion on Friday night looking for their first top-flight win.

Fingal secured their position in the Airtricity League Premier Division with a 4-2 aggregate play-off victory over the Seagulls at the Carlisle Grounds last November.

Buckley’s team collected their first point of the new season last Friday by drawing 1-1 against Sligo Rovers and the manager feels his side are beginning to find their feet at this level.

“It encouraged me that we played well and created enough chances to have beaten Sligo last week albeit we came away with just the one point,” said Buckley.

“I can’t fault the players’ efforts for the two performances so far against Bohemians and Sligo and I’m sure we’ll show further improvements against Bray.”

Abbie Byrne Memorial Cup to be played this weekend

On Saturday, February 27, the inaugural Abbie Byrne Memorial Cup match will take place at the Corduff Sports Centre with the Sporting Fingal powerchair football team playing a side from St Joseph’s in Sallynoggin.

The cup is played in memory of Abbie Byrne, one of the founding members of Sporting Fingal’s powerchair football team. Abbie passed away in October 2009 but left behind her a great legacy. As well as being one of the founding members of the powerchair football team at Sporting Fingal she was the first and only girl on the team and is fondly remembered by everyone involved in powerchair football in Ireland.

Her former team manager, Paul Murphy said of Abbie: “Although she was the only girl on the team, she was well able to mix it up with the lads. She made a great impression on all of us, and we’re delighted to play this game in her memory.”

The game will run from 11.30am to 1.30pm on Saturday, February 27 and Abbie’s mother and sister, Niamh and Shannon, will be presenting the medals and trophy after the game.
